Sentry Insurance Brokers Deacons are the queens of the Cooperators General Insurance volleyball knockouts!
Rallying behind a total team effort Deacons stopped British American Insurance Chargers, 25-19, 11-25, 20-25, 25-21, 15-8, to take the title in two matches and to equal Chargers’ record of sixth knockout crowns on Monday night at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex.
After taking game one in four sets last Sunday, Deacons were expected to blow away the Chargers with their taller and superior attackers. However, the experience of former Barbados captain Anthazia Yearwood and Sharon Bovell almost forced Deacons into a game three.
Yearwood proved deceptive at the net and from the serving area she rattled Deacons for Chargers to snatch the second set at the embarrassing score, 25-11. Chargers then took over to win the third set and lead, 18-13, in the fourth.
However, with Chargers committing numerous unforced errors and the likes of captain Mona Crawford, Julia Lewis, Lauren Whitehall and Fabia Greaves putting away the sets from Sharleen Browne, Deacons surged to win the set and to bring about a decider.
A deflated Chargers never looked the part in the decisive fifth set with Crawford playing the best volleyball of her life as successive kills at, 12-8, and, 13-8, lead to a triple block from Lewis, Greaves and Browne on Bovell to end the contest and to add another bit of silverware to the Deacons’ crowded cabinet.
Former national captain Valmay Stapleton ignored the symptoms of the flu to bask in the glory of her first title victory as coach of the Deacons’ women squad.
