DVM defeated Burger King Clapham Toners 25-21, 15-25, 25-17, 25-23 while Carlton edged Chargers 25-17, 18-25, 19-25, 25-18, 15-12.

Carlton’s attacking plays from six footer Rhea Bryant and Tiara Johnson nullified Chargers’ Dei Padmore, Thonya Joseph, Samya Jones and Shaina Bradshaw.

UWI in straight sets victory

UWI Blackbirds scored a straight sets victory when the Goddard Enterprises Limited division one volleyball league continued at the Wildey Gymnasium.

The Blackbirds surprisingly struggled in their first set before dismissing Club United 27-25, 25-8, 25-19. Club could not contend with the attack of Shakera “Smiley” Hall and Dania Hamilton plus strong blocking from Jayde Adams.

Junior knockout champions Chargers surprisingly lost their opening set to Development Volleyball in Motion before taking the match 15-25, 25-17, 25-22, 25-19 thanks to Latifah Wood, Tonya Joseph and Shaina Bradshaw.

Burger King Clapham Toners scored a straight sets win over Phoenix Security Services Carlton 25-18, 25-18, 25-15. While Carlton missed Nerissa Dyer who left on a volleyball scholarship Toners welcomed the fire from Ashley Jordan who completed her scholarship to burn Carlton.

Deacons almost squandered a two sets advantage before defeating Warrens 25-15, 25-22, 29-31, 20-25, 15-10.

UWI defends title

UWI fluttered from two sets down and two game and match points to ease home 21-25, 25-17, 25-27, 25-16, 17-15, in their defence of the Goddard Enterprises Limited division one volleyball title when the new season was served off at the Wildey Gymnasium. Outstanding play from Desanni Waithe and Kandia Shorey put the Blackbirds under great pressure.

But the superior attack of Dania Hamilton and Shakera Hall dragged the Blackbirds over the line as DVM lost the plot and the game through timid and erratic responses.

A similar performance also denied Club United a chance to upset junior knockout queens Chargers as they faded 25-20, 19-25, 23-25, 25-21, 10-15. Kianna Alleyne had looked good for Club but she lacked the attacking support and was outshone by Chargers’ Dei Padmore, Latifah Wood and Samya Jones.

Chargers are Knockout Queens

Chargers women, are the Goddard Enterprises Limited Junior Volleyball Knockout queens, stopping Development Volleyball in Motion 22-25, 25-23, 25-14, 25-12 at the Wildey Gymnasium on Sunday, August 21, 2022.

A good crowd which included the Minister of Sport, Charles Griffith turned out for the finals with tremendous support and constant chanting and cheering for the various teams enhancing the spirit of the competition.

Chargers fought from a set down after Dessani Waithe and Kandia Shorey gave DVM the early advantage. Eking out a win in the second set Chargers then took control of the game with Dei Padmore, Samya Jones, Latifah Wood and former body fitness queen Janilia Atherley proving too strong in attack and defence for Chargers.

The setting choices from Chargers’ Dayna Babb was exceptional with a late arrival by first choice libero Tonneil Rowe plugging and denying DVM a previous weak spot in Chargers’ reception and defence. DVM also could not match the superior bench strength of Chargers who ensured that a title went to Hill Road, Bank Hall on the night.

Deacons’ women won the third place stopping Phoenix Security Services Carlton 18-25, 25-22, 15-7.

Chargers and DVM women in Finals

Chargers women face Development Volleyball in Motion (DVM) when the Goddard Enterprise Limited junior knockout finals are staged on Sunday August 21, 2022 at the Wildey Gymnasium.

The finalists were decided on Tuesday night with DVM stunning the former queens Deacons in four sets 26-24, 26-24, 17-25, 25-17. Deacons held commanding leads in the contest before DVM shockingly surged to win and take a two sets advantage.

South paws Serena Edwards and Taquilla Lawrence compensated for a subpar performance by overseas based Shanae Boyce to put Deacons in charge with what should have been winning leads. But, meltdowns by Edwards and Lawrence and a steady game by former Deacons player Kandia Shorey gave DVM great hope.

That hope was magnified by the attack of Desanni Waithe and Tamia Woodall with setter Amber Alleyne helping her team to reach their first knockout finals. With Deacons out of the contest both Chargers and Phoenix Security Services Carlton increased their bids to battle in the final on Sunday.

Carlton fought from a set down to lead two sets to one but in the end faded 27-29, 25-18, 25-22, 15-25, 5-15. The attack of Nerissa Dyer and Tiara Johnson seemed potent enough to carry Carlton to their first final.

However, the better setting by Chargers’ captain Dayna Babb and powerful counters from Latifah Wood, Dei Padmore, Shaina Bradshaw and Andrea Oughterson, who came off the bench, denied Carlton. The deciding fifth set was a disappointment with Babb serving Chargers to nine points before Carlton scored.

Deacons who qualified in the second spot among the men, needed three games to stop Advent Ballers 25-18, 18-25, 15-9. UWI Blackbirds finished in the first spot and Hill Road in the third.
