Deacons’ men in control

Men’s champions Deacons took control of the Goddard Enterprises Limited division one volleyball race when the action continued at the Wildey Gymnasium.

Deacons’ men welcomed back Ahkeem Mayers from injury and Akeem Oxley who returned from his scholarship for his father’s funeral in stopping CO Williams Foundation United 25-18, 25-21, 25-21.

Former junior captain Brandon Callender was the sole consistent performer for Foundation who engage in the celebration of every won point.

Former kings Progressive held off an aggressive Starz to score a rare straight sets win 27-25, 25-23, 25-19.

Carlton defeats UWI Blackbirds

Phoenix Services Carlton defeated the defending champions UWI Blackbirds for the second time when the Goddard Enterprises Limited division one volleyball league continued at the Gymnasium. Carlton toppled the Blackbirds to a stunning defeat 25-20, 14-25, 19-25, 27-25, 15-12.

Chargers probably gave up all hopes of taking the title as an encore performance saw them being beaten by Deacons 22-25, 25-20, 17-25, 25-22, 12-15.

Development Volleyball in Motion won their fifth game by blowing away Pan American Insurance Warrens 25-18, 25-20, 25-15.

Cawmere was defeated by Progressive 29-27, 14-25, 25-23, 25-16 but still lead the table.

Progressive stops Starz

Barbados Bearings Progressive recovered to stop Starz Volleyball Club 23-25, 21-25, 25-23, 25-10, 15-10 when the Goddard Enterprises Limited division one volleyball league continued at the Wildey Gymnasium.

Jonathan Alleyne, Jason Hendy and Derion Hurley held Progressive on the ropes. Veteran Fabian Cox, Rico Brathwaite, Zario Cummins and Yvan Grant came through for setter Jerome Stuart to edge out their opponents in the third set and then pulled off the tense victory.

Cawmere edges Progressive

Cawmere men edged Progressive in five bruising sets when the Goddard Enterprises Limited volleyball league continued at the Wildey Gymnasium.

With southpaw Shawn Simpson and former Jamaican player Mark Lewis blasting for Cawmere while libero Akeem Payne matched tremendous passing and defence with his customary trash talking, Cawmere took the game 25-19, 19-25, 24-26, 27-25, 15-13.

Progressive’s veteran Fabian Cox was in ripping spiking form and he also executed demoralizing blocks on Lewis and Simpson. Six feet five Chioke Holder thundered quick attack sets through centre court which gave Progressive the advantage. However, the relentless and bold attacks from Simpson justified Ramon Blade’s choice to set him even in the backcourt which denied Progressive their first win.

Deacons men dismissed their former nemesis Progressive 25-23, 25-19, 25-19 when the Goddard Enterprises Limited division one volleyball league continued at the Wildey Gymnasium.

CO Williams Foundation United notched up their second win of the season after taking another long route. Foundation led Cawmere two love in sets and then had to battle to squeeze out the five sets win 25-15, 25-20, 17-25, 20-25, 15-10.

Deacons’ men start with win

Deacons’ men made a predictable winning start to their defence of the Goddard Enterprises Limited division one volleyball title when the new season was served off at the Wildey Gymnasium.

Deacons’ line-up missed Akil Williams and cousins Ashe Oxley and Akeel Oxley all overseas on scholarships. Then key all-rounder Ahkeem Mayers went down with an injury in the first set against All Stars.

However, the power of attack from veteran Sheldon Roach and young talents, Nkoya Williams-Bailey and Haile Emanuel-Turney saw Deacons dismissing All Stars in straight sets 25-19, 25-16, 25-16.

The opening men’s game saw CO Williams Foundation United battling Progressive for five sets with Kadeem Morris leading Foundation to a tense victory 25-20, 19-25, 25-20, 20-25, 15-11.
