Toners and Deacons in Knockout Finals

League champions Burger King Clapham Toners advanced to the finals of the Goddard Enterprises Limited volleyball knockouts when the semifinals were staged at the Wildey Gymnasium.

Toners had to battle from a set down to stop Chargers 21-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-13. Deacons’ women will also be appearing in the final as they upset the deposed league queens UWI Blackbirds 25-17, 23-25, 25-16, 25-21.

Veteran Thonya Joseph and the highly animated Dei Padmore kept the Toners under pressure for the entire match. However, Ashley Jordan and captain Ashley Marshall who was celebrating a birth night wrestled and kept the the advantage for the eventual winners.

Clapham Toners new queens

Burger King Clapham Toners are the new queens of Goddard Enterprises Limited division one volleyball.

Toners wrapped up the highly competitive season by defeating Theta Math Academy Club United 23-25, 25-13, 25-14, 25-15.

Toners gave their fans some unnecessary flutters as they dropped the first set in a match they needed to win to shut out the Blackbirds. With the Ashleys, Jordan and Marshall mixing crunching spikes with off-speed controlled hits supported by great passing and defence by libero Jhada Goddard to wrap up the championship.

Captain Marshall pointed to the hard work and the successful blending of experienced players with the younger crop which earned them the crown. “We put in a lot of hard work and as the season progressed everyone began to play their respective roles.

“The mixture of the young players with the older helped us to identify what Clapham Toners stood for and the older players mentored us and kept us focused on the club’s objectives. That played a big role in the early part of the season as we were trying to get our stuff together.

“We are sorry that Janelle (Chase-Mayers) and Shennel (Pooler) will be moving on but they helped us tremendously as players and mentors. Toners always provide opportunities for young players and they moving on will make space for younger players. Of course, before they officially retire Toners will be aiming to win the knockout cup as well,” said Marshall.

UWI took the second spot by dismissing Pan American Insurance Warrens 25-11, 25-22, 29-27. Former queens Deacons claimed the third spot by stopping Development Volleyball in Motion 25-15, 25-14, 25-20. Chargers ended fourth by going by Phoenix Security Services Carlton 25-22, 25-21, 18-25, 25-19.

Clapham Toners yet to secure title

Burger King Clapham Toners’ coronation has been put on hold after league action continued at the Wildey Gymnasium. Toners with the crown in sight struggled to defeat Phoenix Security Services Carlton in four or less sets which would have ended the all-season drama for the women’s title. However, Toners squeezed home 25-16, 20-25, 25-12, 23-25, 15-4.

Defending champions UWI Blackbirds held on to their slim hopes of repeating by dismissing a poor-looking Chargers 25-13, 25-16, 25-16. Club United stunned Development Volleyball in Motion 25-15, 25-8, 25-22. That allowed Club United to move out of the cellar with two wins.

Clapham Toners moved closer to title

Burger King Clapham Toners moved even closer to winning the Goddard Enterprises Limited division one title when the women’s volleyball action continued at the Wildey Gymnasium.

Toners obliterated all of Chargers’ hopes of taking the crown with a masterful blowout 25-17, 25-13, 25-19. It was only in the third set that Chargers gained the upper hand before Toners surged to lock from 15 up to 19.

Deacons who were in the hunt dropped to their fourth loss in 13 matches by playing a sub-par game to be trounced by defending champions UWI Blackbirds 23-25, 14-25, 19-25. Carlton laboured to stop Club 22-25, 25-16, 30-28, 25-23.

Deacons women to the top

Former queens Deacons moved to the top of the division one table by defeating Pan American Insurance Warrens 25-7, 25-12, 25-7 when the Goddard Enterprises Limited volleyball league action continued last night at the Wildey Gymnasium.

Defending champions UWI Blackbirds remain in the race by defeating Development Volleyball in Motion, 25-16, 25-22, 25-22. Another contender Chargers dismissed Theta Math Academy Club United 25-17, 25-22, 25-22.

CO Williams Foundation United faded against Progressive 27-25, 16-25, 25-17, 22-25, 11-15 but Deacons’ men seem sure of repeating as champions.

Toners in straight sets victory

Burger King Clapham Toners made a bold move to capture the Goddard Enterprises Limited division one volleyball crown by scoring a sizzling straight sets victory over defending women’s champions UWI Blackbirds when the action continued on Sunday night at the Wildey Gymnasium.

Toners surged from 6-16 in the opening set to stun the Blackbirds 26-24, 25-8, 25-17, While every Toner made telling contributions to their victory, all of UWI’s players shockingly underperformed.

Veteran Janelle Chase-Mayers was outstanding for Toners in blocking and middle attacks while her motivation inspired Ashley Jordan and Ashley Marshall to crush the Blackbirds with their attacks. The passing and defence of Jhada Goddard was impressive for Toners with Shamandra Shillingford coming off the bench to add to the ground play as well as crunching a number of winning serves.
