UWI Blackbirds regain lead

The battle for the Goddard Enterprises Limited women’s division one volleyball crown took another twist with UWI Blackbirds reclaiming the top perch when the league action continued at the Wildey Gymnasium.

The Blackbirds’ 20-25, 25-16, 25-13, 25-20 dismissal of Theta Math Academy Club United regained that lead for the defending champions. UWI welcomed back Shakera “Smiley” Hall from injury but with captain Dania Hamilton and Nikita Wickham missing, Club grabbed the first set and got no further.

Phoenix Services Carlton came from a set down to defeat Pan American Insurance Warrens 13-25, 25-15, 27-25, 25-6.

Carlton defeats UWI Blackbirds

Phoenix Services Carlton defeated the defending champions UWI Blackbirds for the second time when the Goddard Enterprises Limited division one volleyball league continued at the Gymnasium. Carlton toppled the Blackbirds to a stunning defeat 25-20, 14-25, 19-25, 27-25, 15-12.

Chargers probably gave up all hopes of taking the title as an encore performance saw them being beaten by Deacons 22-25, 25-20, 17-25, 25-22, 12-15.

Development Volleyball in Motion won their fifth game by blowing away Pan American Insurance Warrens 25-18, 25-20, 25-15.

Cawmere was defeated by Progressive 29-27, 14-25, 25-23, 25-16 but still lead the table.

Carlton shocks UWI Blackbirds

Phoenix Security Services Carlton shocked defending champions UWI Blackbirds when the Goddard Enterprises Limited division one volleyball first continued at the Wildey Gymnasium.

The Blackbirds suffered their second loss 20-25, 25-21, 18-25, 23-25, 13-15. Even with key player Shakera Hall out injured, UWI were not expected to fall to the inconsistent Carlton. However, setter Janelle Morris and attackers Rhea Bryant and Tiara Johnson stunned the champions.

Former queens Deacons jumped to third by blowing past Development Volleyball in Motion 25-16, 25-22, 25-14.

Chargers defeat UWI Blackbirds

Chargers inflicted the first defeat on defending women’s champions UWI Blackbirds to remain in the division one race when the Goddard Enterprises Limited volleyball action continued at the Wildey Gymnasium.

A highly animated Dei Padmore led Chargers to victory 25-23, 23-25, 25-20, 15-25, 15-13 in an electrifying contest which ended 15 minutes after midnight. Shakera “Smiley” Hall and Nikita Wickham looked set to score the come from behind win for UWI. However, Padmore, Shaina Bradshaw and Thonya Joseph combined to squeeze out the tense victory.

UWI Blackbirds remain undefeated

UWI Blackbirds moved to a fifth successive victory by thumping Warrens 25-20, 25-21, 25-19 when the Goddard Enterprises Limited division one volleyball league continued at the Wildey Gymnasium.

UWI hardly missed a beat with replacement setter Signa President filling in for the injured Afyia Taylor to maintain their attacking strength through Shakera “Smiley” Hall, Dania Hamilton and young Aiyana Reid.

Former queens Deacons also won their game in straight sets giving a great birthday present to former Barbados libero Marissa Dowell by outplaying Theta Math Academy Club United 25-14, 25-20, 25-17.

UWI pushed to the edge

UWI Blackbirds women were pushed to the edge before holding on to their unbeaten records when the Goddard Enterprises Limited division one volleyball league continued on Monday, September 5, 2022, at the Wildey Gymnasium.

UWI depended on Shakera “Smiley” Hall to survive as they battled from two sets down and with key setter Afiya Taylor fighting a leg injury to beat Deacons 25-23, 18-25, 16-25, 25-12, 15-9. Captain Dania Hamilton and Jayde Adams added to Hall’s attack and defence with Deacons’ left-hander Serena Edwards and former Barbados libero Marissa Dowell threatening the upset with smart attacks.

Former queens Burger King Clapham Toners were also taken to five sets in a substandard performance against Club United 23-25, 22-25, 25-8, 25-16, 16-14. With Ashley Marshall going off with an injury in the second set Toners’ Ashley Jordan’s and Janelle Chase-Mayers’ efforts were good enough to edge Club.
