Deacons men survive onslaught

Deacons men held on to their unbeaten record when the Goddard Enterprises Limited division one volleyball league continued on Monday, September 5, 2022, at the Wildey Gymnasium.

Deacons’ men survived an onslaught from Foundation 21-25, 25-14, 23-25, 25-19, 15-12. Key attacker Ahkeem Mayers returned from injury to assist veteran Sheldon Roach and young guns Haile Emanuel-Turney and Nkoya Bailey-Williams.

However, with Unri Clarke playing an improved game of attack and defence, Foundation rallied behind the play of Brandon Leonce, Kadeem Morris and former Barbados Junior captain Brandon Callender, to hold a two sets to one advantage.

The power serving, spiking and tremendous ground defence of both teams entertained the spectators immensely as the action went to a decider. Deacons took charge of that key set with setter Ronald Rice going repeatedly to Bailey-Williams as he found his range and powered his team to game and match point 14-10.

Cawmere who were beaten by Foundation on Sunday night rebounded by beating Starz 25-19, 23-25, 25-22, 25-11. Starz’s Jonathan Alleyne and elite division basketballer Derion Hurley could not match the fire from Shawn Simpson and Mark Lewis.
