Wildey Gymnasium, January 27, 2020: The Christ Church Foundation School created volleyball history when the Massy Stores schools’ league finals climaxed on Monday at the Wildey Gymnasium.

Playing in front of a large crowd of supporting students and family Foundation won their first under 19 girls’ title and then made a double strike as their boys repeated to give the school their first double crown in that age group.

An obviously pleased coach Fernando Skeete pointed to CCFS becoming a six form school being key in their historic achievement. “In previous years we would train volleyballers to a particular skill level but lose them as they pursued a higher level of education and we would often lose to BCC.

“Becoming a six form institution helped us to not only keep many of our players but we also attracted players from other schools. In spite of our double I was disappointed that the girls who are experienced junior nationals dropped the first set.

“However, one must understand that regardless of how strong a girls’ team is they can drop their performance without explanation. Even so, having girls who take part in multi-disciplines make them easier to train as their athleticism helps tremendously with movement. We will definitely be looking to repeat next year,” stated Skeete.

After dropping the first set to their nemesis, The St. Michael School, Foundation rebounded to take the girls’ crown 22-25, 25-14, 15-11. Junior Caribbean MVP Tenielle Chapman-Goodluck was outstanding for SMS.

However, she and SMS were outdone by junior Barbados players Chante Moore, Dessani Waithe, Tiffany Webster, Serena Edwards, Dei Padmore and Aiyana Reid.

SMS shockingly started Chapman-Goodluck in the backcourt serving first in the decider. Foundation quickly broke the serve and rushed to a 6-1 advantage which SMS could not recover from.

BCC’s main hopes former Barbados Youth captain Che Taylor and Christopher Best experienced deja vu since they received a similar mauling last year from Foundation while wearing The Lodge School colours.

Foundation deflated Best and BCC in the first set as the bespectacled junior national player was repeatedly rejected at the net and Taylor, who started in the back court was not allowed to rotate to the front to help his sinking team.

It was only when Taylor started in the front court in the second set that BCC made some counterattacks. But with Crawford-Wallis leading the charge, Clarke seized the chance to show that he was an equally potent force to dismiss the Eyrie lads with superior skill and power.
