Chargers women defeat Deacons

Chargers’ women won their second preliminary match when the senior volleyball knockout preliminaries continued at the Wildey Gymnasium on Sunday, September 6.

Chargers defeated Deacons 25-9, 25-22, 8-25, 25-20.

Carlton, in spite of losing Barbados player Nerissa Dyer who has returned to studies in the United States, rolled over Warrens 25-14, 25-18, 25-23. The Blackbirds surprisingly dropped a set to Development Volleyball in Motion before taking the match 25-21, 24-26, 26-24, 25-14.

Deacons men start with a win

Champions Deacons men made a predictably easy and successful start to their defence of the senior volleyball knockout crown while All Starz created history at the Wildey Gymnasium on Wednesday, August 23.

Deacons defeated Foundation United 25-21, 25-23, 25-22 although their Barbados starter Ahkeem Mayers was late and Ashe Oxley never suited up. Foundation played their customary game of celebrating points but struggling to win sets or matches.

Starz won their first game against a division one team in straight sets and defeated Cawmere for the first time in their six-year first division career taking the match 25-13, 25-17, 25-15. Jason Hendy, Kyle Croney, and Derion Hurley were outstanding for Starz.

Carlton with a second win

Phoenix Security Services Carlton continued their winning streak when the senior knockout continued at the Wildey Gymnasium on Wednesday, August 23.

In the battle to go two games up Phoenix Security Services Carlton proved their come-from-behind five sets win over Chargers was no fluke as they stopped Hill Road 25-21, 25-15, 25-20. The play of Nerissa Dyer, Rhea Bryant, Tamika Husbands, Tiara Johnson, and setter Tiffany Webster proved a potent combination for Carlton.

Chargers rebounded from their first game loss stopping Warrens 25-21, 18-25, 25-15, 25-11. In the second set Chargers were up 21-18 before the officials spotted a positional fault by Chargers. With the scores being reverted to 18-18 Warrens seized that set but nothing more.

Senior KO serves off

Deacons suffered a weak start to the defence of their senior women’s knockout title when the preliminary rounds of that competition were served off on Monday, August 21 at the Wildey Gymnasium.

In a Zone C game Deacons took the first set from Hill Road before losing a five-setter 25-19, 20-25, 16-25, 26-24, 13-15.

Chargers stumbled from two sets up to lose to the unpredictable Phoenix Security Services Carlton in the other Zone C match 25-18, 19-25, 25-17, 21-25, 11-15.

In the Zone D matches, Burger King Clapham Toners stopped Development Volleyball in Motion 25-23, 25-18, 25-18. While UWI Blackbird handed a similar loss to Club United 25-14, 25-15, 25-18.

Mixed fortunes for Barbados

Barbados experienced mixed fortunes when the 18th CAZOVA volleyball championship was served off at the Anthony Nesty Sports Hall in Paramaribo, Suriname on Sunday, July 23.

In the first game, Barbados girls were defeated by defending champions Trinidad and Tobago 23-25, 23-25, 25-20, 19-25. However, in the night cap game Barbados men crushed the hosts and defending champions Suriname in straight sets 25-18, 25-18, 25-19.

Shonte Seale was the consistent player for the Bajan girls while for the men Ahkeem Mayers led the assault supported by captain Akeel Oxley and US-based Ammuniki Wood to defeat Suriname in a match that finished 15 minutes after midnight.

It was not a good opening day for Suriname as their girls went down in five sets to former queens Bahamas. T&T men matched their girls in defeating Jamaica in four sets.

Barbados launches CAZOVA bid

Barbados launches its bid to regain regional volleyball supremacy with the former six times queens meeting defending champions Trinidad and Tobago in the opening game of the CAZOVA championship on Sunday, July 23 in Suriname at 10.00.

Since arriving here on Thursday, July 20 following a 95 minutes jaunt from Barbados the Bajans have been able to get in two solid training sessions on Friday and Saturday. With five women’s teams participating they will play round Robin to qualify for play off spots.

Haiti was slated to participate but after purchasing tickets they were not granted transit visas on time by Panama. That left T&T, Barbados, Jamaica, Suriname, and the Bahamas to battle for the crown.

However, with the men divided into groups, Suriname had a Group A choice of Barbados or Martinique and they opted to meet Barbados the former 10 times kings on Sunday, July 23 in the night cap game at 8.30. Group B of the men contains The Bahamas, T&T, Jamaica, and Curaçao.
