Sunday, October 22 – Chargers men breeze past Progressive when the Goddard Enterprises Limited division one volleyball action continued at the Wildey Gymnasium.
Chargers defeated Progressive 25-18, 25-21, 25-15 with Chad Griffith and Jonathan Alleyne leading the charge. Cawmere showed resilience coming from two sets down to dim All Starz 19-25, 23-25, 26-24, 25-19, 15-12.
Sunday, October 22 – Warrens, Deacons, and Chargers also picked up relatively easy victories and points when the Goddard Enterprises Limited division one volleyball action continued at the Wildey Gymnasium.
Deacons beat Hill Road 25-14, 25-21, 20-25, 25-20. Warrens stopped Phoenix Security Services Carlton 25-21, 25-14, 12-25, 25-22. Chargers whipped Club United in straight sets 25-21, 25-20 25-12.
Sunday, October 22 – UWI Blackbirds accentuated their bid for double crown honours this season by scoring a five sets victory over defending league champions Burger King Clapham Toners when the Goddard Enterprises Limited division one volleyball action continued at the Wildey Gymnasium.
The knockout queens came from two sets down to hand Toners their second defeat of the first round 25-13, 17-25, 17-25, 25-20, 15-10. Ashley Jordan looked likely to keep Toners in the hunt with her all-round play. However, the counter punches from UWI’s Tenielle Chapman-Goodluck and Dessani Waithe proved too powerful for Toners.
The Officers and Members of the Barbados Volleyball Association express their deepest sympathies on the passing of former champion team Progressive’s setter Ian “Gary Mud” Cox.
Cox who passed away yesterday evening after a lengthy illness was an uncomplicated setter who unleashed the likes of national captain John Stuart, Nigel Grant, Fabian Cox, Caribbean MVP Ivor Lashley, and many other deadly attackers for Progressive to dominate volleyball in the 80s.
Over the past 20 years, Cox devoted his time to coaching his girlfriend Kim Holder, and their daughter Kyana Holder to win multiple titles in the indigenous sport of road tennis. Cox’s passion as a coach and supporter of his family was just as great and obvious as when he played volleyball.
The BVA extends condolences to Kim, Kyana, and the Progressive family.
Knockout queens UWI Blackbirds continued their flight towards double crowns when the Goddard Enterprises Limited division one volleyball league action continued on Monday, October 16 at Oldbury, St. Philip.
The Blackbirds dismissed former champions Deacons in straight sets 25-22, 25-21, 25-23. Barbados player Desanni Waithe maintained her top form with six-footer Tenielle Chapman-Goodluck adding to the superiority of UWI.
Chargers who failed to win a set when they met UWI in the knockout finals were shockingly carried to five sets before edging Warrens 25-22, 22-25, 25-21, 19-25, 16-14. Warrens’ inconsistency cast them into defeat as they led 14-3 in the opening set and 8-5 in the decisive fifth set.
Rhe-Ann Niles-Mapp excelled for Warrens with Thonya Joseph, Andrea Oughterson, and Latifah Wood giving Chargers the winning edge.
Deacons’ men captured the Goddard Enterprises Limited senior volleyball knockout crown when the finals were staged on Wednesday, September 20 at the Wildey Gymnasium.
Chargers lost in a straight sets blowout with Deacons paying homage to their former coach and teammate Patrick ‘Pat De Dog’ Oxley who passed away exactly one year ago.
MVP Nkoya Williams-Bailey and consummate attacker Ahkeem Mayers along with setter Ronald Rice dismissed Chargers 25-20, 26-24, 25-14. New recruit Jonathan Alleyne played a critical attacking role for Chargers. But, Mayers and Williams-Bailey enjoyed the supporting experience of Sheldon Roach and Pernell Blunt to please their large crowd of supporters dressed in green.
