Apex hand Deacons first loss

Thursday, May 22, 2025 – KFC Deacons stumbled in defence of the Barbados Volleyball Association’s men’s division two crown when they were upended in straight sets on Thursday night on their home court by newcomers to the division, Apex, 18-25, 20-25, 23-25.

Apex, led by Guyanese attacking duo Devendra Latchman and Shemroy Ross and inspirational setter Ramon Blades, avenged last year’s first loss to Deacons in division three at the same venue.

Apex outplayed Deacons in the opening two sets before Deacons stormed back to hold leads of 12-6 and 19-16 to threaten to take the match into a fourth set. However, Apex remarkably rallied to take the lead 20-19 and went to game and match point 24-22 before ending the battle 25-23.

WOW Foundation United unbeaten

Thursday, May 15, 2025 – WOW Foundation United continued their unbeaten run in the Barbados Volleyball Association’s Division Two league after being given a scare by newly promoted Apex on Thursday night at Oldbury, St. Philip.

FU had to battle from a set down to take the match 19-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-17, with former standout NCAA player Jabarry Goodridge dominating Apex’s defence. The newcomers looked impressive in the indoor facility, with Guyanese duo Davindra Latchman and Shemroy Ross, along with attorney Martie Garnes, providing great fight for Apex.

Ironically, while the pouring rain impacted the other outdoor fixtures, the large crowd at Olbury enjoyed entertaining attacks and counterattacks from both teams. Six foot four Rashawn Alleyne proved vital in executing demoralising one on one blocks on Apex.

Unfortunately, the second game involving the home team, Advent, was not as exciting. Hill Road rolled over Advent 25-21, 25-20, 25-17.

Before the rains, Cave Hill KFC Deacons outclassed UWI 25-21, 25-17. No other matches were completed on the night.

KFC Deacons in Pivotal Position

Thursday, March 27, 2025 – KFC Deacons put themselves in a pivotal position to retain the Division One volleyball title when they handed WOW Foundation their first defeat in the league at the Wildey Gymnasium.

After trailing Foundation for the entire season, Deacons seized the big moment to dismiss them in front of a large crowd 25-18, 25-27, 25-15, 25-10. After evening the contest by taking the second set, Foundation suffered when their key player, Barbados junior Dominic Durant, suffered an injury and had to leave the game.

Deacons also suffered a similar fate when their southpaw Barbados under-19 player, Isaiah Francis experienced an injury and left the game at 15-9 in the third set. However, with by far superior reserves, Deacons outplayed Foundation.

Burger King Clapham Toners Upset KFC Deacons

Wednesday, March 26, 2025 – In a dramatic five-set battle, the Burger King Clapham Toners defeated the season-long favorites, KFC Deacons. Led by the unstoppable Ashley Jordan, the Toners staged a stunning comeback, overturning the Deacons’ dominance with scores of 15-25, 25-19, 25-20, 18-25, 15-12.

Chargers claimed their match against Carlton in commanding style, breezing through with scores of 25-16, 25-20, 25-13. Their seamless teamwork and unmatched firepower proved too much for Carlton.

KFC Deacons and WOW Foundation Ready for Championship Showdown

Tuesday, March 25, 2025 – The stage is set for an electrifying clash as defending champions KFC Deacons prepare to face unbeaten contenders WOW Foundation in the highly anticipated Division One volleyball championship match. Both teams showcased their dominance during matches at the Wildey Gymnasium, paving the way for what promises to be an intense battle for glory.

Deacons delivered a commanding performance, dispatching Starz with a straight-sets victory of 25-16, 25-15, 25-20. Known for their precision and team chemistry, the champions left little room for their opponents to make an impact.

Meanwhile, WOW Foundation extended their flawless record with another decisive win, overpowering the Ifill School Police 25-15, 25-16, 25-16. The team continues to impress with their relentless pace and strategic plays, fueling speculation about whether they can dethrone the reigning champions.

Adding to the evening’s excitement, Chargers defeated Barbados Bearings Progressive 25-21, 25-17, 25-13 in a spirited display. Despite the presence of former Barbados captain Renier Grace, now playing for Progressive, Chargers maintained their composure and secured a victory.

Blackbirds Soar to Victory in Thrilling Five-Set

The atmosphere at the Wildey Gymnasium was electric as Division One volleyball queens UWI Blackbirds staged a stunning comeback to defeat cup contenders KFC Deacons in a gripping five-set battle. The match, which had fans on the edge of their seats, ended with the Blackbirds taking the victory 20-25, 25-16, 25-15, 24-26, 15-12.

The Deacons had looked poised to take the decisive fifth set, surging to a 12-8 lead with momentum firmly in their favour. However, the Blackbirds had other plans. Led by the powerful spiking of Barbados’ six-footer Tenielle Chapman-Goodluck, the Blackbirds clawed their way back into contention. Chapman-Goodluck’s relentless attacks, combined with the impeccable serving and setting of Carah Watson, saw the Blackbirds rally for seven unanswered points, securing the win and leaving Deacons stunned.

In other action at Wildey, Warrens continued their impressive run with a hard-fought victory over Phoenix Security Services Carlton. Despite dropping the first set 22-25, Warrens stormed back to claim the next three sets 25-22, 25-20, 25-22.
