UWI Blackbirds defeat Clapham Toners

Sunday, October 22 – UWI Blackbirds accentuated their bid for double crown honours this season by scoring a five sets victory over defending league champions Burger King Clapham Toners when the Goddard Enterprises Limited division one volleyball action continued at the Wildey Gymnasium.

The knockout queens came from two sets down to hand Toners their second defeat of the first round 25-13, 17-25, 17-25, 25-20, 15-10. Ashley Jordan looked likely to keep Toners in the hunt with her all-round play. However, the counter punches from UWI’s Tenielle Chapman-Goodluck and Dessani Waithe proved too powerful for Toners.

UWI Blackbirds flying on

Knockout queens UWI Blackbirds continued their flight towards double crowns when the Goddard Enterprises Limited division one volleyball league action continued on Monday, October 16 at Oldbury, St. Philip.

The Blackbirds dismissed former champions Deacons in straight sets 25-22, 25-21, 25-23. Barbados player Desanni Waithe maintained her top form with six-footer Tenielle Chapman-Goodluck adding to the superiority of UWI.

Chargers who failed to win a set when they met UWI in the knockout finals were shockingly carried to five sets before edging Warrens 25-22, 22-25, 25-21, 19-25, 16-14. Warrens’ inconsistency cast them into defeat as they led 14-3 in the opening set and 8-5 in the decisive fifth set.

Rhe-Ann Niles-Mapp excelled for Warrens with Thonya Joseph, Andrea Oughterson, and Latifah Wood giving Chargers the winning edge.

UWI Blackbirds, KO Queens

UWI Blackbirds women captured the Goddard Enterprises Limited senior volleyball knockout crown when the finals were staged on Wednesday, September 20 at the Wildey Gymnasium.

UWI easily disposed of Chargers 25-11, 25-18, 25-19. Chargers’ key players Dayna Babb and Thonya Joseph turned up late in the first and second sets respectively at which stage the Blackbirds were totally in control of the contest.

Chargers had no answer for MVP Tenielle Chapman-Goodluck and captain Shakera ‘Smiley’ Hall with new acquisition Desanni Waithe continuing her great all-around play for the Blackbirds. Dei Padmore battled valiantly but in vain for the losing Chargers.

Chargers women defeat Deacons

Chargers’ women won their second preliminary match when the senior volleyball knockout preliminaries continued at the Wildey Gymnasium on Sunday, September 6.

Chargers defeated Deacons 25-9, 25-22, 8-25, 25-20.

Carlton, in spite of losing Barbados player Nerissa Dyer who has returned to studies in the United States, rolled over Warrens 25-14, 25-18, 25-23. The Blackbirds surprisingly dropped a set to Development Volleyball in Motion before taking the match 25-21, 24-26, 26-24, 25-14.

Senior KO serves off

Deacons suffered a weak start to the defence of their senior women’s knockout title when the preliminary rounds of that competition were served off on Monday, August 21 at the Wildey Gymnasium.

In a Zone C game Deacons took the first set from Hill Road before losing a five-setter 25-19, 20-25, 16-25, 26-24, 13-15.

Chargers stumbled from two sets up to lose to the unpredictable Phoenix Security Services Carlton in the other Zone C match 25-18, 19-25, 25-17, 21-25, 11-15.

In the Zone D matches, Burger King Clapham Toners stopped Development Volleyball in Motion 25-23, 25-18, 25-18. While UWI Blackbird handed a similar loss to Club United 25-14, 25-15, 25-18.

UWI Blackbirds defeat Comanchees

The UWI Blackbirds men easily dismissed the BDF Comanchees 25-9, 25-16 when the Goddard Enterprises Limited junior volleyball knockouts continued on Tuesday night at Cave Hill.

The superior attack of Carlos Cyrus and Adam Niles proved too powerful for the soldiers. In an earlier game Blazers stopped Advent Ballers 25-22, 25-21.

Two female games were played at Hill Road with Warrens defeating Chargers 29-27, 25-23 and Hill Road stopped Foundation United 25-8, 23-25, 15-6.
