UWI in straight sets victory

UWI Blackbirds scored a straight sets victory when the Goddard Enterprises Limited division one volleyball league continued at the Wildey Gymnasium.

The Blackbirds surprisingly struggled in their first set before dismissing Club United 27-25, 25-8, 25-19. Club could not contend with the attack of Shakera “Smiley” Hall and Dania Hamilton plus strong blocking from Jayde Adams.

Junior knockout champions Chargers surprisingly lost their opening set to Development Volleyball in Motion before taking the match 15-25, 25-17, 25-22, 25-19 thanks to Latifah Wood, Tonya Joseph and Shaina Bradshaw.

Burger King Clapham Toners scored a straight sets win over Phoenix Security Services Carlton 25-18, 25-18, 25-15. While Carlton missed Nerissa Dyer who left on a volleyball scholarship Toners welcomed the fire from Ashley Jordan who completed her scholarship to burn Carlton.

Deacons almost squandered a two sets advantage before defeating Warrens 25-15, 25-22, 29-31, 20-25, 15-10.

UWI defends title

UWI fluttered from two sets down and two game and match points to ease home 21-25, 25-17, 25-27, 25-16, 17-15, in their defence of the Goddard Enterprises Limited division one volleyball title when the new season was served off at the Wildey Gymnasium. Outstanding play from Desanni Waithe and Kandia Shorey put the Blackbirds under great pressure.

But the superior attack of Dania Hamilton and Shakera Hall dragged the Blackbirds over the line as DVM lost the plot and the game through timid and erratic responses.

A similar performance also denied Club United a chance to upset junior knockout queens Chargers as they faded 25-20, 19-25, 23-25, 25-21, 10-15. Kianna Alleyne had looked good for Club but she lacked the attacking support and was outshone by Chargers’ Dei Padmore, Latifah Wood and Samya Jones.

Mixed Fortunes for Clubs

Phoenix Security Carlton ensured that Hill Road suffered mixed fortunes when the Goddard Enterprises Limited junior volleyball knockouts continued on Sunday at the UWI, Cave Hill court.

With Tiara Johnson, Nerissa Dyer, Kianna White and setter Katelynn Clarke leading the way Carlton defeated Hill Road boasting veterans Anthazia Mason and Sharon Bovell 25-15, 24-26, 15-8. Kimisha Marshall fought valiantly to stop Carlton from scoring their third win in five matches.

Hill Road men saved the team some pride by stopping Club United 25-14, 29-27. Chargers’ men were defeated by the home side, UWI 16-25, 26-24, 26-24.

Wow Foundation also experienced mixed fortunes in their home court battles at Church Hill. The men edged Advent Ballers 22-25, 25-18, 15-7 after the women folded to Development Volleyball in Motion 14-25, 17-25.

The Bagatelle home court offered no favours to Ifill School Police. Their women were trounced by Chargers 25-9, 25-21 while the Policemen slipped against Deacons 18-25, 25-16, 4-15. Deacons’ women were defeated by Club United 25-18, 23-25, 10-15.

Rain Disrupts Matches

The Goddard Enterprises Limited junior volleyball knockout action was disrupted by the rain on Thursday July 14, 2022 with just two games being completed.

The normally big clash between home team Chargers and Deacons women proved to be one sided with Chargers taking the Hill Road encounter 25-13, 25-23. The intended battle between Chargers men and Hill Road who are also based at Hill Road was washed out.

The Deacons squad hardly looked its usual challenging unit as Chargers enjoyed the luxury of leaving United States scholarship setter Dashonta Addison on the bench for most of the match as Dayna Babb filled the role of running the attack.

Sanya Jones and Latifah Wood of Chargers proved potent in attack with Wood and Tricia Phillips being dominant in net defence. The dependable Marissa Dowell and Serena Edward gave Deacons some hope in the second set before folding to the straight sets loss.

Down Free Hill the visiting side Hill Road women took three sets to stop The Club 17-25, 25-21, 15-5. The weather then prevented the match between Advent men and Club from being played. Both games slated for Bagatelle in St. Thomas were washed out.

Battle for top positions

The battle for the third spot among the men and women intensified when the Goddard Enterprises Limited division one volleyball continued on Saturday, December 5, 2020, at the Wildey Gymnasium.

Deacons and Cawmere are guaranteed the first and second position in the men while UWI Blackbirds and Chargers will battle for the winners’ spot among the women.
