Hill Road, Deacons Final

Hill Road men will battle defending champions Deacons when the Goddard Enterprise Limited junior knockout finals are staged on Sunday August 21, 2022 at the Wildey Gymnasium.

Hill Road reached the men’s final in a bruising 26-24, 31-33, 25-20, 27-25 win over UWI Blackbirds. That game seemed a personal battle between former Barbados setter Dale Addison who was on fire for Hill Road and an unstoppable Carlos Cyrus who previously played with Addison for Chargers. It seemed fitting that Addison in tandem with Samuel Fraser stuff blocked Cyrus to win game and match point in set four.

In the heat of the fire at the net it was almost unnoticeable that former Barbados captain Anthazia Mason played libero for Hill Road while former St. Lucian leader Dania Hamilton filled that role for UWI. Another past Barbados skipper Renier Grace suited up for UWI and Alain London who also led Barbados men turned out for Hill Road.

The other men’s semi was a high energy game which surprisingly ended in straight sets as Deacons lead by United States based Akiel Oxley stopped CO Williams Foundation United 25-18, 25-13, 25-20. Foundation as customary added excitement by celebrating every point won.

Chargers and DVM women in Finals

Chargers women face Development Volleyball in Motion (DVM) when the Goddard Enterprise Limited junior knockout finals are staged on Sunday August 21, 2022 at the Wildey Gymnasium.

The finalists were decided on Tuesday night with DVM stunning the former queens Deacons in four sets 26-24, 26-24, 17-25, 25-17. Deacons held commanding leads in the contest before DVM shockingly surged to win and take a two sets advantage.

South paws Serena Edwards and Taquilla Lawrence compensated for a subpar performance by overseas based Shanae Boyce to put Deacons in charge with what should have been winning leads. But, meltdowns by Edwards and Lawrence and a steady game by former Deacons player Kandia Shorey gave DVM great hope.

That hope was magnified by the attack of Desanni Waithe and Tamia Woodall with setter Amber Alleyne helping her team to reach their first knockout finals. With Deacons out of the contest both Chargers and Phoenix Security Services Carlton increased their bids to battle in the final on Sunday.

Carlton fought from a set down to lead two sets to one but in the end faded 27-29, 25-18, 25-22, 15-25, 5-15. The attack of Nerissa Dyer and Tiara Johnson seemed potent enough to carry Carlton to their first final.

However, the better setting by Chargers’ captain Dayna Babb and powerful counters from Latifah Wood, Dei Padmore, Shaina Bradshaw and Andrea Oughterson, who came off the bench, denied Carlton. The deciding fifth set was a disappointment with Babb serving Chargers to nine points before Carlton scored.

Carlton’s Semifinal Chance

Phoenix Security Services Carlton women rose from the ashes to score a win over Deacons and gave themselves an outside chance of making the semifinals of the Goddard Enterprises Limited junior knockouts on Thursday at the Wildey Gymnasium.

After Deacons won the first set Carlton surged to take the game in a remarkable fashion 18-25, 25-20, 15-13. Carlton can leapfrog Hill Road for the qualifying fourth spot by defeating COW Foundation United at Free Hill on Saturday August 13, 2022 .

Hill Road women can only blame themselves for being uncertain if they would qualify in the fourth position after they stumbled to DVM 22-25, 25-18, 13-15.

Four Teams Qualify

Overseas based Nathan Crawford-Wallis suited up to attack and helped COW Foundation cement one of the four qualifying spots in the semifinal round by dismissing Chargers 25-14, 25-23, when the Goddard Enterprises Limited junior knockouts continued on Thursday at the Wildey Gymnasium.

Deacons who qualified in the second spot among the men, needed three games to stop Advent Ballers 25-18, 18-25, 15-9. UWI Blackbirds finished in the first spot and Hill Road in the third.

Mixed Fortunes for Clubs

Phoenix Security Carlton ensured that Hill Road suffered mixed fortunes when the Goddard Enterprises Limited junior volleyball knockouts continued on Sunday at the UWI, Cave Hill court.

With Tiara Johnson, Nerissa Dyer, Kianna White and setter Katelynn Clarke leading the way Carlton defeated Hill Road boasting veterans Anthazia Mason and Sharon Bovell 25-15, 24-26, 15-8. Kimisha Marshall fought valiantly to stop Carlton from scoring their third win in five matches.

Hill Road men saved the team some pride by stopping Club United 25-14, 29-27. Chargers’ men were defeated by the home side, UWI 16-25, 26-24, 26-24.

Wow Foundation also experienced mixed fortunes in their home court battles at Church Hill. The men edged Advent Ballers 22-25, 25-18, 15-7 after the women folded to Development Volleyball in Motion 14-25, 17-25.

The Bagatelle home court offered no favours to Ifill School Police. Their women were trounced by Chargers 25-9, 25-21 while the Policemen slipped against Deacons 18-25, 25-16, 4-15. Deacons’ women were defeated by Club United 25-18, 23-25, 10-15.

Rain Disrupts Matches

The Goddard Enterprises Limited junior volleyball knockout action was disrupted by the rain on Thursday July 14, 2022 with just two games being completed.

The normally big clash between home team Chargers and Deacons women proved to be one sided with Chargers taking the Hill Road encounter 25-13, 25-23. The intended battle between Chargers men and Hill Road who are also based at Hill Road was washed out.

The Deacons squad hardly looked its usual challenging unit as Chargers enjoyed the luxury of leaving United States scholarship setter Dashonta Addison on the bench for most of the match as Dayna Babb filled the role of running the attack.

Sanya Jones and Latifah Wood of Chargers proved potent in attack with Wood and Tricia Phillips being dominant in net defence. The dependable Marissa Dowell and Serena Edward gave Deacons some hope in the second set before folding to the straight sets loss.

Down Free Hill the visiting side Hill Road women took three sets to stop The Club 17-25, 25-21, 15-5. The weather then prevented the match between Advent men and Club from being played. Both games slated for Bagatelle in St. Thomas were washed out.
