UWI Blackbirds with Victory Over Advent Ballers

Thursday, May 22, 2025 – The UWI Blackbirds cemented their place in the top three of the Barbados Volleyball Association’s Division Two League with a hard-fought straight-sets win over Advent Ballers on Thursday night at Clapham.

Despite the final score suggesting a routine victory, the Blackbirds had to summon all their resilience to edge out their opponents 25-23, 25-22, 25-23.

In another keenly contested Division Two matchup, the visiting Chargers women also walked away victorious. They overcame Burger King Clapham in a nail-biting affair, winning 26-24, 25-22.

Kolij and Combermere Share Honours

Wednesday, May 23, 2025 – Combermere School experienced mixed fortunes when they hosted Harrison College in the National Sports Council’s schools’ junior league tournament at Waterford.

Combermere’s boys rebounded to defeat Harrison College 25-9, 25-9 after the Waterford lasses were defeated by the Kolij Lionesses 25-14, 25-19. The Kolij girls, boasting division one players Talia Sandiford and Cuzarah Batson along with Naima Cabey, were obviously the superior team.

However, pint-sized Danielle Forde played an outstanding game for Combermere after her team lost the first set. Down 13-7 in the second, Forde executed some impressive spiked serves to pull Combermere around to 14-13 before HC then recovered momentum to take the set and game.

Just like HC’s girls, Combermere’s boys possess a superior force, and they unleashed it to trample their opponents to ensure shared glory on the evening. Joshua Ashby, T’Jay Sobers and talented player Kymani Sandiford quickly established and maintained dominance in both sets.

Daniel Reece was impressive from the service area with a curling spiked serve, which racked up numerous aces in both sets for the Waterford lads.

Apex rebound over Advent

Saturday, May 17, 2025 – Newly promoted Apex used the Bagatelle home advantage on Saturday night to rebound from their last loss to division two WOW Foundation United by whipping Advent Ballers 25-15, 25-16, 25-20.

Guyanese duo Davindra Latchman, Shemroy Ross, and attorney Martie Garnes led the fight for Apex. Former Barbados player Rene Archer provided a counter for Advent, but he and his teammates were too inconsistent to win at least a set.

Earlier at Bagatelle on Saturday night, Simba Alleyne led Foundation United’s division three men to a 25-21, 25-17 win over Development Volleyball in Motion.

The UWI Blackbirds dismissed Chargers 25-15, 25-22 in a women’s division two battle.

WOW Foundation United unbeaten

Thursday, May 15, 2025 – WOW Foundation United continued their unbeaten run in the Barbados Volleyball Association’s Division Two league after being given a scare by newly promoted Apex on Thursday night at Oldbury, St. Philip.

FU had to battle from a set down to take the match 19-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-17, with former standout NCAA player Jabarry Goodridge dominating Apex’s defence. The newcomers looked impressive in the indoor facility, with Guyanese duo Davindra Latchman and Shemroy Ross, along with attorney Martie Garnes, providing great fight for Apex.

Ironically, while the pouring rain impacted the other outdoor fixtures, the large crowd at Olbury enjoyed entertaining attacks and counterattacks from both teams. Six foot four Rashawn Alleyne proved vital in executing demoralising one on one blocks on Apex.

Unfortunately, the second game involving the home team, Advent, was not as exciting. Hill Road rolled over Advent 25-21, 25-20, 25-17.

Before the rains, Cave Hill KFC Deacons outclassed UWI 25-21, 25-17. No other matches were completed on the night.

Vintage Volliers Defy Age

Tuesday, April 22, 2025 – Experience reigned supreme as Vintage Volliers, a team comprised of seasoned players in their forties and fifties, proved that wisdom beats youthful energy with a commanding 25-13, 25-19 victory over Development Volleyball in Motion in the opening matches of the Barbados Volleyball Association’s Division Two and Three league at the Police Boys and Girls Club.

Meanwhile, in another matchup, the Police Sports Club dismissed WOW Foundation United 25-22, 25-19. Led by sponsor and teacher Akil Ifill, who suited up and scored impressive kills while tutoring the youngsters in attacking volleyball.

UWI Blackbirds Soar at Cave

Tuesday, April 22, 2025 – Home team UWI Blackbirds defended their turf with a hard-fought victory over Hill Road. The Blackbirds maintained the dominance of home teams, overcoming Hill Road in a four-set battle: 25-16, 26-28, 25-18, 25-20.

Before that thrilling showdown, the Chargers wasted no time in stamping their authority on Spikenards, securing a straight-set triumph, 25-9, 25-20. While the loss dampened Spikenards’ long-awaited return to competitive volleyball after more than two decades away from the court, their resilience hinted at a promising future for the team.
